Car Thief Shot After Trying to Steal SUV

Cape Girardeau, Missouri – A juvenile was shot after trying to steal a car from an armed citizen on Monday.

According to Cape Girardeau Police Department (CGPD), officers were called to a residence in the 400 block of Sheridan to a report of a stolen vehicle. Responding units quickly located the car with the suspect inside near Minnesota and Good Hope St.

The suspect, a male juvenile, ran from police when they attempted to pull him over.

“Officers initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the suspect failed to yield to officers and then fled from the car on foot.” Sgt. Joey Hann of CGPD said in a statement about the incident.

After a brief car chase the suspect ran on foot towards the 400 block of S. Minnesota, near Jefferson Elementary where he attempted to steal yet another car at a different home.

The owner of the SUV came out of his home and began to fight with the youth in an effort to stop the theft.

The two of them, “engaged in a physical altercation and the suspect eventually drew a handgun and fired several shots at the vehicle owner,” said Sgt Hann.

After the young suspect pulled a gun and opened fire, the vehicle owner went to retrieve his own gun. and shot the suspect in the left hip, ending the battle.

Police arrested him and he was taken to the hospital with what was described as non-life-threatening injuries.

Sgt. Hann declined to give the suspects identity or age since he is considered a juvenile and reports that the investigation is still on going.

No one else was injured from the chase or shooting and there have been no reports of any charges filed against the owner of the SUV who shot the young man.
